DNM Certified Pet Nutrition Specialist

Dr. Marion Smart taught and practised in veterinary pathology, clinical pathology and large animal medicine for more than 35 years.

Her early research was in the inherited metabolic defect associated with chondrodysplasia in Alaskan malamutes.

Dr. Smart has a PhD from the U of S Department of Animal and Poultry Science in copper and zinc metabolism in beef cattle. She was a Medical Research Council Fellow and received over $500,000 to fund nutritional research over the years.

Dr. Smart taught a small animal nutrition elective course to fourth-year veterinary students since 1994 — the first of its kind in North America at that time. She has written teaching manuals for beef, dairy cattle, sheep and goat nutrition and management. She has also co-ordinated and taught a graduate course in ruminant nutrition and metabolism.

Dr. Smart was invited to participate in industry-sponsored seminars and conferences in Canada and the United States, and she gave talks on nutrition to various small animal associations and groups. In addition, Dr. Smart acted as a consultant for many small pet food manufacturers across Western Canada.

Dr. Smart retired from the U of S in July 2014.
